Marta Future Expansion Plans

BELTLINE CORRIDOR (Largest Project)

1. A 22-mile facility that encircles the central portion of the City of Atlanta and includes transit, trails, and parks.

2. This distinctive and exciting transit project has the potential to connect existing neighborhoods with existing MARTA rail stations while providing the necessary transit capacity to serve planned developments for decades to come.

3. The project is proposed to be constructed within existing freight rail rights-of-way that snake between the in-town neighborhoods surrounding central Atlanta. Some segments of these freight rail lines are inactive, while some portions, particularly in the northwest, remain in heavy use. This freight activity poses a challenge as MARTA works to develop a cost-effective and environmentally sound transit route that meets all Federal safety requirements.

Clifton Corridor

1. The use of high-capacity transit connections between the Lindbergh Center/Armour Yard area in north-central Atlanta to Emory University and the City of Decatur in west-central DeKalb County.

2. The Clifton Corridor is one of the largest activity centers in metro Atlanta without convenient access to the interstate system or MARTA rail connections.

3. These conditions have created high levels of traffic congestion on a severely limited network of roadways. The corridor is home to a number of well established residential communities and several major employers such as Emory University, Emory Healthcare, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Veterans Administration Medical Center & Regional Offices, and the DeKalb Medical Center.

North Line (GA 400) Corridor (2nd Largest Project)

1. Potential high-capacity transit line from the Perimeter Area to Windward Parkway

2. Development of higher strength land uses that will support a major transit outlay within the GA 400 Corridor between McGinnis Ferry Road and the North Springs rail station.

3. The North Point Cluster - This cluster of potential shops, restaurants, retail outlets, and residential development could be tied together with a system of sidewalks and trails which would all be connected to transit.

4. This will encourage a range of mixed income residential neighborhoods, employment, shopping, and recreation choices

5. Provide access to a range of travel options, including transit, walking, and biking.

MARTA implements solar panels

1. MARTA will use a $10.8 million in federal grant funding to install solar panels on top of bus canopies.

2. The project will become the largest photovoltaic system in Georgia. The steel and concrete bus canopies will cover 220 bus parking stalls, with translucent solar panels allowing in natural lighting during the day and an energy-efficient lighting system producing illumination at night.

3. The panels will generate electric power equivalent to the facility’s annual consumption of electricity, with potential for future expansion.
